Research Centre

P.S.R. Engineering College (PSREC) is a leading Institution in the southern region of Tamil Nadu. Centre for Research at PSREC provides research opportunities to the aspiring candidates serving in Educational Institutions / Industries / Research Organizations / Research Laboratories and Government Departments. The support provided by the PSREC research centre to the research community includes internally funded projects through PSREC grants, externally funded projects through DST, AICTE and similar grants, book writing grants and start-up grants. In addition to that and in order to support the junior faculty to get on board actively in research, our centre sponsors the Junior Faculty Grant (JFG) designed for fresh young graduate faculty members. Supporting research and scholarly activities is not limited to research areas of the institution, but is also extended to serving the community through societal grants for studies of relevance and benefit to the local society. Centre for Research does not only support research activities of our faculty, but also contributes to their scholarly and teaching skills through research projects, conference attendance support, and collaboration with international institutions.

We are doing our utmost efforts to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of research activities at PSREC. We strive to achieve our goal of leadership in quality research that is focused and directed towards excellence in the areas of expertise of our faculty and researchers. We hope to create the support, guidance and conducive environment that will enhance quality research outputs and will support PSREC leadership role in the local as well as the international community.

We count on our faculty, researchers and students to play the major role in achieving our common goal of excellence in research. We also invite you all to provide us with your suggestions and feedback for the improvement of the services we provide to the research community. This Centre is offering admission to Ph.D. programmes twice a year. Details required for the scholars/supervisors are posted in the website and periodically updated. Helpdesk is available for scholars to express their problems /to clarify any doubts.

Research Committee

In order to strengthen and expand the research activities in the institute, R&D cell was established and is functioning in this Institution from last several years. The R&D Cell promotes research activities in frontier areas of Engineering, Science, Technology and Management. Research activities includes the enhancement in the research publications in peer reviewed journals, Research Projects, Patents, Industry Collaborations, and to receive grants from various funding agencies like DST, AICTE, CSIR, MSME, TNSCST, DRDO, DAE, UGC etc.

Research Policy

    Promotion of Research and Innovation


    The PSREC grants freedom to its students and faculty,

    • To carry out research in their chosen field
    • To approach any funding agency to seek support for their research work
    • To report their findings and conclusions freely

    However, the PSREC reserves the right to scrutinize the research proposal and make it available for constructive criticism of peers. PSREC also expects that researchers shall not violate established professional ethics, norms pertaining to the health, safety, privacy, and other personal rights of human beings or to the infliction of injury or pain onanimals. The institute shall strive to create a conducive environment for research. The institute, to the extent feasible, support all research to be undertaken, by allocating the space, facilities and other resources for research programmes based on the scholarly and educational merits of the proposed research. It shall also provide development opportunities to researchers for writing research proposals andr eports, publications, patent filing,etc.

    Identification of Thrust Areas

             Although the researchers have the freedom to choose their own topics of research,it is highly desirable to make research socially relevant. The institute expects the different departments to have a thrust area of research, with a view to be focused in theirefforts.

    Research Projects

             A faculty member can submit a research project to any government or non-government agency.Every research proposal has to be submitted for institute’s approval through the Principal office which will maintainan up-to-date record of all submitted as well as sanctioned research projects. The institute may monitor the progress, maintain its accounts and submit the utilization certificate in time to the funding agency for all funded research projects. The institute also encourages students and faculty members to report findings from a research project either as a publication or patent

    Publication of Papers in Journals

              Faculty members shall be expected to publish their research in refereed national and international journals. Except in case of Indian languages, it is expected that the journals are indexed in SCOPUS (Elsevier) and/or Web of Science. In order the improve quality of research publications, institute shall provide incentive for all such publications that appear in SCOPUS (Elsevier) and/or Web of Science indexed journals.

    Consultancy and sponsored research

             PSREC encourages its faculty to take up sponsored research and consultancy assignmentsand projects. All consultancy activities will be governed by statutes as updated from time to time. Any intellectual property arising out of sponsored research will be owned jointly by the institute and theconsultant.

    Patent and IPR

             The institute encourages its research community to file for patents arising out of their work. The application for filing patent will have to be submitted to institute’s Research Committee for scrutiny. Expenses for filing patent, sharing of revenue in case a patent is commercialized shall be done as per statutory provisions. The institute shall create awareness about intellectual property rights among faculty, researchers and scholars from time to time.

    Collaborative National & International Research

             PSREC encourages its faculty members to conduct collaborative research with their peers from reputed National and International Universities and Institutions. The institute may also sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with prominent Universities and Research Institutions, for conducting joint research in the areas of common interest.

    Research Misconduct

    • Research misconduct is defined as any fabrication,falsification or plagiarism in proposing,performing or reviewing research or in the reporting results of research.
    • Research misconduct does not include an honest error or difference of opinion, authorship dispute that donot involve plagiarism, and violations of other University policies (e.g., sexual harassment policy).
    • PSREC believes that the occurrence of misconduct is a threat to the basic principles of research.
    • The institute shall put in place a mechanism for taking action on all allegations of misconduct, and shall ensure that the procedures for the inquiry, investigation and adjudication of any misconduct are well defined and just for all partiesinvolved.

    • Cash incentives for research publications in refereed National/ International journals.
    • Financial assistance to faculty for presenting technical papers in national, international conferences / workshops / FDPs / Seminars.
    • Continuous augmentation of Centers of excellence/Research labs with state of art equipment and software.
    • Supporting measures for patent filing.

Consultancy Policy

    Definition of Consultancy Services and Projects

    Consultancy services and projects include an assignment or job basically for providing expert advice, problem solving, targeted training, testing and laboratory based experimental work, market research and survey. The faculty member of the Institute or the department involved in consultancy are referred as consultants and the industry or private party or any other outside agency seeking consultancy is referred as the beneficiary.

    General Principles of Consultancy

    • A consultancy work may be undertaken by the faculty members in their area of expertise
    • The consultancy services should be undertaken only with prior permission from the Institute
    • It should not interfere with the discharge of prime duties of the faculty member or thedepartment
    • Consultancy services should not be in conflict with the interest of the Institute
    • In the context of consultancy services, the consultant should not directly or indirectly get associated with any other activities which may be unethical orinappropriate
    • The two types of consultancy are Individual Consultancy and Institutional Consultancy. Individual Consultancy is offered by a faculty member in his/her individual capacity. Institutional Consultancy is offered by a team of faculty members from the same discipline or different discipline of theInstitute
    • In the case of foreign consultancies, the Institute will permit to take up the consultancy based on the nature of the consultancy work. The consultant team has to execute a bond with theInstitute
    • All payments for consultancy shall be routed through institute only. This means, that whenever payments are done, they should come in the name of the institute, electronically into the designated bank account and institute will then do the needful for complying with statutory laws and then give the share to the faculty/staff as the case may be. No individual faculty member shall receive any compensation either cash or in kind directly
    • Breakup of the consultancy charges may not be shared with the client. Only a lump sum figure of total consultancy charges may be quoted. However, the working sheet should be maintained as a part of internal records and shall be subjected to Internal Audit as deemed necessary
    • The consultancy agreement shall be in conformity with the laws of India as laid out in the Standardized Terms and Conditions. In exceptional circumstances after due approvals, compliance with both the Countries and/or International laws may be agreed upon
    • The responsibility for completing the Project rests solely with the PI. The agreed deliverables are the responsibility of the PIs. Institute provides the PIs only the necessary support
    • After completion of the project, a final Project Completion Report shall be provided to the funding agency and two copies shall be submitted to the office of Principal for records
    • A Completion Certificate should be obtained from the funding agency for successful completion of the project based on which only the project account will be closed by the institute
    • Testing & Evaluation services may be offered to meet the needs of governmental and related agencies, special clients and other outside educational institutions
    • Standardization and Calibration services may be offered in areas in which facilities are available within institute or can be augmented. Such services should normally be backed by periodic Calibration/ Standardization of laboratory equipment used for such purposes
    • In extraordinary cases, where the Institutional consultancy work taken up cannot be completed by the PI, institute reserves the right to reassign the consultancy work to another Investigator

    Institutional Policy on Revenue sharing

    The consultancy fees for the consultant should be mentioned in the budget proposal submitted by the beneficiary and should be approved by the Principal

    Exclusions

    This policy does not apply to those activities, which may be paid or unpaid, and which are in furtherance of scholarship or general dissemination of knowledge, such as but not limited to:

    • Authorship of or royalties from publication of books
    • Research, training and teaching
    • Guest Lectures, serving on Scientific Advisory Boards, Research Councils and Professional Associations and Statutory Bodies
    • Service on charitable committees
    • External examiner duties
    • Lecture tours and conference presentations or attendance
    • Editorship of academic journals or publication of academic articles
    • Professional arts performances
    • Any other activity as defined by the job description of the Staff

    Personal Consultancy will not be allowed typically in the following circumstances:

    • When the Consultancy services are to support projects such as research projects, which are already being conducted at PSREC
    • When such Consultancy would contractually preclude PSREC or its Staff from engaging in other research or other consultancy
    • When there is any potential to bring PSREC into disrepute
    • Whether the proposed personal consultancy will impact on the individual’s work with PSREC
    • To protect the available Intellectual Property Rights of PSREC

CODE OF ETHICS FOR RESEARCH

    • The research scholars of P.S.R. Engineering College (PSREC) are expected to maintain academic integrity in their research work. Academic integrity includes values of morality, trust, honesty, respect, social responsibility, legality and professionalism.
    • The research scholars of PSREC should adhere to relevant policies of government, institution and professional societies.
    • The scholar whose research involves human subjects, animal subjects and nature should obey the relevant policies while carrying out the research.All the scholars should respect the human rights and dignities of all those involved in any inquiry project and must appropriately address questions of consent, power relations, deception, confidentiality and privacy. In particular, scholars must address a range of complex issues around developing and maintaining respectful and ethical relationships with research partners based on mutual respect for academic traditions and institutional circumstances.
    • All the scholars are encouraged to disseminate original results of their research in the case of projects and thesis.
    • Any scholar exhibiting misconduct the necessary disciplinary actions will be taken according to the type of allegation and the report of investigation. If the registration of particular scholar is cancelled, he/she will not be eligible for readmission to any of the courses of this institution.
    • Cases of misconduct includes plagiarism, piracy, abuse of copyrights, abuse of research resources, misuse of funds, fabrication, falsification of data, fraudulent changing of records, misconduct in formal examinations, disrupting the works of others and misleading ascription of authorship.
    • If the scholar faces any issues while carrying out the research that should be reported to the concerned supervisor very immediately.
    • Over and above, all the scholars of PSREC are expected to follow the research conduct rules of MHRD, UGC and Anna University, Chennai by which PSREC is affiliated.

Research Centres

    PSREC built innovative and effective interdisciplinary programs in Waste management techniques, eco-friendly structural members, coastal research, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Image processing, Composite Materials, Renewable Energy systems, Artificial Intelligence and observing innovative and latest technology in all fields. PSREC plays an important role among the human society needs to understand the fundamental workings of the Scientific advances, engineering innovation and educational excellence.

    Research Projects:

    One of the important criteria to judge the performance of research output of the institution is to obtain recognition by reputed Government/Autonomous sponsoring agencies towards generation of funds to conduct quality research. The institute has received a number of research grants from agencies like AICTE, DST, NAAC, DRDO, CSIR, SERB, ISTE, UGC, ICSSR, TNSCST etc. over the period. In addition to this, PSREC has also encouraged the faculty members to initiate research by giving the seed money to undertake various minor research projects. The funds obtained through the research projects/ grants have significantly increased in last few years, with total research funds of nearly Rs. 124.8 Lakhs obtained during academic year 2016-2017 to 2022-2023. Major research grants include, research grant of Rs.106.2 lakhs received from All India Council Technology and Engineering (AICTE). Research fund of Rs.17.04 lakhs from DST, and 1.12 Lakhs from TNSCST and 0.45 lakhs from Texas instruments.

    Research Publications:

    As a result of tireless efforts taken in the research activities, the PSREC has to its credit many research publications in National and International peer reviewed Journals. The faculty members have also presented research papers in various reputed national and international conferences. It is noteworthy to mention here that research papers have published in peer reviewed journals with impact factor in the range 0.3 to 8.5.
